Why natural products?
There’s a lot of hype about going natural: natural foods, natural clothing, natural skincare… What does natural really mean? Is it better for you? Why should you care? As with anything, it is more important to know what is in your product than it is to buy solely based on marketing words, such as “all natural”. Natural soap and body care products are no exception.

Let’s look at why it’s important to use natural soap.
What goes in your natural soap matters because it goes on your body. Your skin is the biggest organ of your body, delivering what is absorbed to the bloodstream and beyond. While synthetic soaps may be formulated for hydration, softness, or cleanliness, the list of ingredients may contain substances which can cause more harm than good. The addition of natural ingredients, such as shea butter or olive oil do improve your skin naturally, but there are additives being absorbed with the good-for-you ingredients. What gives?!
Natural soap’s components are fairly simple: caustic salt (lye) & fat. It’s a cool combination of chemistry and consideration. While the foundation of soap begins with those ingredients, there are many possible additions that can aid in specific results. For example, goat’s milk can be added to deliver vital nutrients to your skin. It is prized for its soothing abilities as well. We’ve created Oat Milk Rx, a handmade soap crafted for those with highly sensitive skin, eczema, and psoriasis. Another highly prized ingredient is honey. Antibacterial and restorative, honey is full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes. Our Honey Loofah Bar Soap is a clever little bar, with a built-in loofah for gentle exfoliation and nourishing honey for smooth, hydrated skin.
While natural soap is usually designed with plant or animal-based ingredients (ours are always cruelty-free), detergents are usually synthetic in composition. Detergents are used in everything from laundry soap to liquid hand soap. Although surfactants, a major component in liquid soaps, were designed to remove dirt and oil, they strip away skin’s natural oils meant for protecting and hydrating the skin. To replace the oils removed, synthetic moisturizers like silicone may be added back in. The concern is the harsh detergents, fillers, foaming agents, and synthetic perfumes added to these kinds of soaps.
We call those types of ingredients the “Dirty Dozen”. This toxic cocktail can be harmful beyond stripping the moisture from your skin. From known to carcinogens to endocrine disruptors, the limited regulations on the cosmetic or health and beauty industry means that you must act as your own advocate.
Advocating for yourself becomes difficult when marketing may persuade you to think a product is safe.
It’s important to know what certain labels mean, what they can include, and what they may not include. One great example is the word “hypoallergenic”. According to the FDA, the word hypoallergenic can mean whatever the manufacturer wants it to mean; no proof is required by the regulatory agency.(1) Words like natural can even be a whitewash. The only way to know what is going in or on your body is by researching ingredients and company standards.
At KIND soap, we are always upfront about what we add to our natural soaps, lotions, balms, bath bombs, or anything else that bears our beautiful label. But we’re not just a pretty face. And we’re not about cutting costs in order to gain more profit. We’re bearing it all (when it comes to our products… our KIND experts are not going there), so that you can know that what you put on yourself and your loved ones truly is safe and luxurious for your skin.
We were founded on the Three Pillars of KINDness: to be KIND to your skin, the earth, and others. When you’re choosing a natural soap through us, you’re free to learn about each ingredient used in our products. Want to know why we added calendula to our Aloe Rescue Rx? We’ve disclosed that in our Glossary so that you don’t have to wonder. (It’s because it’s been shown to be an integral part of the healing process, in case you didn’t want to click on. You’re welcome!)
We want you to be a KIND fan because you know that you’re choosing products that are good for your body. Our handmade soaps were born out of a mother’s passionate search to help her eczema-ridden son. We’re all glad she didn’t stop there. Choosing a natural soap for the family, your skin care regimen or products for your baby’s delicate skin is easy with KIND. We’re intentional about what goes in our products and on your loved ones. We want to educate and empower you to make decisions that fit your smart decisions to lead a more natural lifestyle. To learn more about the benefits of natural soap, click here.
